Moorabbin Squadron now recruiting

A new Air League squadron has landed in Kingston and is looking for boys and girls aged 8 to 18 to join its ranks.

Last Sunday the brand new Moorabbin Air Museum Squadron was introduced to the other 12 Victorian Air League Squadrons, Mordialloc MP Lorraine Wreford, and Minister for Aviation Gordon Rich-Phillips at the Air League’s Annual Victoria Group Review and Field Competitions at Moorabbin Airfield.

Ms Wreford welcomed the arrival of the new Squadron and encouraged people aged 8 to 18 to consider joining.

Ms Wreford said “The Air League is a fantastic organisation. I am pleased that this new squadron is here and locals have an opportunity to join and get involved. The Australian Air League promotes good citizenship, teamwork and resourcefulness in setting that is fascinating to anybody interested in aviation.”

The Air League’s Annual Victoria Group Review and Field Competition attracted around 150 people, largely from the Victorian squadrons which are based everywhere from Bendigo, Ballarat to Cranbourne. The event included competitions in model aeroplane building, aviation education displays and various drill exercises.

Group Executive Commissioner Adrianne Fleming said: “The new Moorabbin Air Museum Squadron now has 15 cadets, but we would like more. They meet for two hours week where they learn skills like those above as well as things like first aid, cooking and camping. They even have the opportunity to participate in athletics and swimming competitions, fun nights and the like.”

Speaking at the Group Review, Minister Rich-Phillips highlighted the importance of the Air League.

“A key challenge for the aviation sector is attracting young people to aviation careers, and the Air League is so important to achieving this,” he said.
