Legacy is a uniquely Australian organisation which stands behind the loved ones left behind by those who serve our country and defend our freedom. Established in 1923 by ex-servicemen, Legacy is dedicated to the task of caring for the widows and dependants of their comrades who have served in a war or operational area or whose death was occasioned by hazardous service or training for war. On the South Coast Legacy supports about 1,000 widows and dependants. The Annual Legacy Appeal raises much needed funds to allow Legacy to continue to provide services to these families who have suffered the loss of a husband, father or provider during military action.

Upon arrival, Cadets were greeted by the local Mayor of Wollongong and other dignities. Cadets enjoyed a three course meal with soft drinks and assisted in raising funds for Legacy. An open auction was held and consisted of a framed replica of a Victoria Cross and photos of all VC recipients of World War 1, a signed 2014 Sydney Roosters Football Team Jersey and a signed 2014 NSW State of Origin Jersey. Lucky door prize of a 10 kilogram block of Cadbury Chocolate was also a major draw, unfortunately a smiley face was not under one of our cadets bread and butter plate!

Guest Speaker for the luncheon was Corporal Mark Donaldson VC from the ADF, SASR who is the author of the best-selling book “The Cross Road – a story of life, death and the SAS”. Cpl Donaldson VC is a natural soldier who completed the most rigorous of mental and physical tests to become a member of Australia’s elite Special Air Service (SAS) where he continues to serve today. Corporal Donaldson VC spoke about his life growing up in Dorrigo NSW and how he came to serve with the Australian Defence Force.

The Cadets who attended were treated to a meet and greet with Cpl Donaldson VC where they were asked about the Australian Air League, their Squadron and what aspirations our cadets have for their future. Cpl Donaldson VC personally signed copies of his book that the cadets had brought with them and also made time for photo’s.
