Air League Seeks to Take off on the Sunshine Coast

The Australian Air League is seeking to take off on the Sunshine Coast, opening a new Squadron there for young boys and girls aged 8 to 18.

Cadet members from the Australian Air League are again set to attend the upcoming Queensland Air Museum’s Open Weekend on 1st July 2017 to view their displays and experience these aspects of aviation heritage and history first hand. Both the Queensland Air Museum and the Sunshine Coast Aero Club have been very supportive of the aviation-orientated youth organisation and have expressed surprise that the Air League does not yet have a squadron on the Sunshine Coast. Given the wide range of aviation activities and the many flight schools that operate across the Sunshine Coast region the Air League has determined that this is an ideal place to expand the organisations presence in Queensland.

To establish a squadron on the Sunshine Coast just seven members are required together with a couple of adults to train as leaders. Initially, a Sunshine Coast squadron would be operated by some of Air Leagues’ existing officers whilst these local leaders are trained.

Activities include, but are not limited to, ceremonial drill, aviation theory, meteorology, navigation and aircraft construction. In conjunction with its aviation related activities values such as leadership, self-discipline, good citizenship and team work are also developed.

The Australian Air League also provides opportunities to participate in a range of flying experiences, including gliding and powered flying.

The Australian Air League, formed in 1934, is a national not-for-profit, uniformed youth organisation for boys and girls aged 8 to 18 and is widely regarded as the ‘primary school of aviation’.
