New Squadron Planned for Cowra
Young people across Cowra and surrounding districts will soon have the opportunity to take to the skies, learn aviation theory, and build lifelong leadership skills as the Australian Air League prepares to reestablish a squadron in the town.
Founded in 1934, the Australian Air League is a nationwide, self-funding youth organisation for boys and girls aged 8 to 18. Dedicated to fostering an interest in aviation – whether as a future career or a passion – the organisation combines hands-on aviation education with personal development, teamwork, and community engagement.
Meet the Team at the Cowra Show
Recruitment kicks off at the upcoming Cowra Show on October 16 and 17.
Families are invited to visit the Air League display to meet current members, inspect training materials, and ask questions about squadron activities. Highlights of the weekend will also include a live performance by an Air League marching band on Saturday afternoon.
Information Meeting: Saturday, October 25
To officially introduce the program to local families, an open public meeting will be held later in the month:
- When: Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 PM
- Where: Cowra Services Club, Brisbane Street, Cowra
- Who: Prospective cadets (ages 8–18), parents, guardians, and prospective adult volunteers
This session provides a complete overview of the cadet curriculum, uniform requirements, membership fees, and the squadron formation timeline.
What Cadets Can Expect
While aviation sits at the heart of the organisation, the Air League offers a varied program designed to help young Australians develop self-discipline, confidence, and citizenship:
- Aviation & Flying: Model aircraft construction, principles of flight, navigation, air experience flights, and pathway flight training.
- Field & Team Skills: Camping, fieldcraft, first aid, physical training, and team sports.
- Ceremonial & Music: Drill, ceremonial parades, and marching bands.
- Leadership Pathways: Progressive rank structures and leadership training for senior cadets.
Following squadron formation, regular meetings will run Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Cowra Aero Club building at Cowra Airport, commencing in early November.
Adult Volunteers Needed
The Air League is entirely run by dedicated volunteers. Parents and community members passionate about youth development, aviation, or administration are encouraged to register their interest. All adult volunteers undergo screening, including a Working With Children Check, to ensure a safe, supportive environment for all members.
Whether your child dreams of becoming an airline pilot, an aeronautical engineer, or simply wants to make new friends and learn valuable practical skills, the Cowra Squadron will provide a welcoming launchpad. Come along to the Cowra Show or the Cowra Services Club meeting to take the first step.
