Tracking Traffic “Red One”

The most critical IFR flight plan of the year has been filed, and the airspace is buzzing. If you want to monitor the world’s oldest active airframe on its annual sortie, here is your briefing on the best tracking tools available.

Airservices Australia: Our local Air Traffic Controllers have assigned the VIP the call sign “Red One.” The Santa Flight Management Team has issued a special NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) to clear the path. They will be tracking his entry near Norfolk Island and managing his separation from commercial traffic until he exits via the Cocos Islands.

Flightradar24: For the aircraft spotters, Flightradar24 is tracking the sleigh – registration HOHOHO (Type Designator: SLEI). It is fully equipped with an ADS-B transponder which uses reindeer antlers as an antenna booster. You can search for call sign R3DNO53 to see his altitude, ground speed, and even a 3D view of the flight.
