Moffat Wing Model Competition

The Moffat Wing, Victoria Group recently heeld a model competition that was a great success. A total of 17 cadets participated and the models were of great standard.

The rules were designed to encourage cadets to participate by entering any model they wanted. They had to complete the paint and decals according to the instructions and build it ‘out of the box’. Entrants had to write around half a page describing the subject aircraft (eg. manufacturer, model, when it was operated and in what role) and some details on how they build the model (including describing the paints used, tools and techniques). This information was used by judges to better understand the skills and knowledge that the cadets have in building models.

Grant and Matt Elliot provided independent judging. They assessed the models on three things:

  1. Construction
  2. Finishing
  3. Documentation

The ‘Open’ category was for 18+ members but also allowed younger cadets to enter models that required more advanced techniques and weren’t ‘out of the box’. It included the use of resin, photo-etched parts and alternative decals. This allows more advanced builders to compete in a more challenging category and showcase their skills.

The results were

Group 1 – Ages 8 – 11

  1. L/Cdt Sebastian Duyvestyn (Niddrie)
  2. Cdt Flynn Bird (Geelong)
  3. Cdt Jake Mitchell (Geelong)

Group 2 – Ages 12 – 15

  1. L/Cdt Eugene Toh (Point Cook)
  2. Cpl Max McGrath (Point Cook)
  3. L/Cdt Jay Quinlan (Point Cook)
